South Africa’s draft National Norms and Standards for the recognition of Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs)

The draft Norms and Standards for Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs) explain how certain areas outside formal protected areas can now be recognised for conserving biodiversity. They are issued under section 9 of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, 2004 (NEM:BA).
