Proposed Production Activities in Block 11B/12B South Coast, South Africa

Main Street 1549 (Pty) Ltd (Main Street) is applying for an Environmental Authorisation to develop an offshore gas field in Block 11B/12B. The Block is located off the South Coast, approximately 75km offshore at its closest point, roughly between Cape St Francis and Mossel Bay.

Natural gas pockets were discovered in Block 11B/12B at the Brulpadda and Luiperd wells in the Paddavissie Fairway. At the time, the joint venture partners started the process to secure a Production Right, and the necessary Environmental Authorisation to develop these resources. TotalEnergies EP South Africa (“TEEPSA”) commissioned an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (“ESIA”) process, including public participation throughout 2022 and 2023.

The original joint venture included TEEPSA, QatarEnergy, Canadian Natural Resources International (South Africa) Limited and Main Street. Since then, all the parties, except Main Street have withdrawn from the Block 11B/12B project entirely, leaving Main Street as the sole company responsible for the project.

Following the withdrawal of the joint venture partners, Main Street planned to conduct ‘non-invasive downscaled surveys’ in Block 11B/12B, and Block 9 held by PetroSA. However, Main Street now plans to expand the survey activities to include the development of the entire Padavissie Fairway and is starting a new ESIA process.

This community information pamphlet was developed in September 2026 to share key information about the project. The deadline to submit comments on the Basic Scoping Report is Thursday,15 October 2026.
