Oil and gas exploration on South Africa’s Southern Coast

Main Street 1549 (Pty) Ltd (Applicant) plans to conduct offshore surveys in Blocks 9 & 11B/12B (65–190 km off the South Coast, affecting communities in coastal towns including: Mossel Bay, Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, St. Francis Bay and Gqeberha. These surveys could lead to future oil/gas drilling and may affect sea life, people’s livelihoods and cultural heritage.The law requires Main Street to consult local communities at every stage of their application for Environmental Authorisation (EA) to undertake various survey activities for Blocks 9 & 11B/12B.

This stage of Main Street’s EA application is known as the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) Phase.

This information pamphlet was created to raise awareness about the project, it’s potential impacts, and to encourage affected communities and individuals to comment on the ESIA.
