Submission: Fracking Regulations, South Africa

Natural Justice made a submission to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment in South Africa, regarding the Proposed Regulations Pertaining to the Exploration and Production of Onshore Oil and Gas Requiring Hydraulic Fracturing.

The regulations attempt to provide oversight on hydraulic fracturing projects in South Africa. However, Natural Justice’s submissions show that the Regulations as proposed, fall far short international best practice in the regulation of hydraulic fracturing “fracking”. We also indicate that we are deeply concerned that the continued exploration of oil and gas (which these regulations seek to enable and fast track) undermine South Africa’s commitments toward biodiversity protection and climate actions.
