Background
Established in 2021 ELCA, is a Natural Justice Initiative that seeks to anchor the growing movement of African lawyers by amplifying their actions and supporting their legal actions to protect the continent from environmental and climate injustice. The role that African lawyers have and continue to play in the legal fight against the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, and pollution is undeniable. However, despite the insistence of these legal actions, Africa remains rife with corporations and governments exploiting, destroying and extracting the natural resources on the continent with little to no regard on the impact to the livelihoods, health, safety or cultural and environmental heritage practices of our African communities.
ELCA provides these lawyers with a unique platform to foster solidarity in legal actions and offers its members a number of capacity building resources, that are essential to fighting climate challenge and environmental degradation.
