Defending territories of life: A discussion with communities about using international law and the Living Convention to protect and defend knowledge, territories and ways of life.
Natural Justice and the ICCA Consortium invite you to participate in the launch of the Living Convention: an accessible compendium of international rights. Together with the launch, we will be having a facilitated discussion about the important distinction between Indigenous peoples’, local communities’ and peasants’ rights and about how various community members are using international instruments to assert their rights and protect their knowledge, territories and ways of life.
The Living Convention is an innovative publication that allows communities to navigate the complex and varied terrain of international human rights. The third edition, authored by Harry Jonas and Marie Joyce Godio, was published this year and provides an appropriate opportunity to discuss how we can domesticate international laws and contribute to the protection and conservation of cultural and biological diversity.
The launch will be both a celebration of the publication and a space to celebrate the determination and resilience of Indigenous peoples, local communities and peasants in pursuit of protecting their sacred relationships with nature.
