Who is Natural Justice? 

Natural Justice is an African non-profit organization specializing in environmental justice. Natural Justice uses the law to support communities to participate in decisions that affect their land, culture, and environment. We are a close-knit and nurturing collective that emphasizes facilitating opportunities for its members’ professional and personal growth. 

Natural Justice has been working with communities, NGOs, and government agencies in Kenya since 2009. Together with our partners, we conduct comprehensive research on environmental and human rights law, use community legal empowerment approaches, including community paralegals, to support communities protect their access to lands, resources, and traditional knowledge; provide legal advice and training to project partners, comment on environmental impact assessments, and make submissions on law and policy. Our projects are carried out in Kenya under three programmatic streams: affirming community rights, defending community rights, and standing with communities. What we are looking for 

Natural Justice seeks a Communications Fellow who will work across the organization to support the Campaigns and Communications Officer in implementing an ambitious, high-quality, and impactful campaigns and communications agenda based on the Natural Justice strategic plan and priorities. 

You will play a key role in supporting technical communication work — design and layout of print material and digital graphic design work. Working with a professional camera, shooting high-quality footage and quality editing of the same. You will also support in managing social media, particularly interpreting social media analytics and developing a template of action to boost audience engagement. You will also conceptualize and design our branding materials, including brochures, banners etc. 

You will directly work with the Campaigns and Communications Officer in Kenya and interact with the Snr. Communications Officer, Head of Campaigns and Communication, and staff across all programs. 

We are specifically looking for individuals who can, among other tasks, undertake the following

  • Help implement communication strategies. 
  • Support the multimedia storytelling plan. 
  • Track projects and media mentions and analyze any trends you see. 
  • Manage the contact database. 
  • Maintain the communications calendar and suggest activities. 
  • Support in social media management – particularly reports on audience analysis. 
  • Develop concepts, graphics and layouts for social media, program reports and website content. 
  • Video editing and photography. 

The Fellowship will be for a period of up to 11 months, full-time. A modest salary will be offered. The successful applicants will be required to begin by November 2022.  

Selection Criteria 

Qualifications and Personal Profile: 

  • Must have completed a bachelor’s degree in Journalism/Public Relations/Communications 
  • Able to use Canva or have knowledge of other desktop publishing software like InDesign. 
  • Able to use a professional camera to shoot stills and video. 
  • Able to tell powerful stories using pictures or short videos. 
  • Excellent IT skills, especially with design, video, and photo-editing software. 
  • Demonstrable ability to design and launch petitions. 
  • Demonstrable ability to write good press releases 
  • Good knowledge of social media marketing an advantage. 
  • Good knowledge of email marketing – understanding of Mailchimp an advantage. 
  • An understanding of social media as an advocacy tool. 
  • Exceptional creativity and innovation. 
  • Excellent time management and organization skills. 
  • Strong attention to detail. 
  • Ability to balance priorities and co-ordinate work effectively to meet deadlines and deal with high workloads. 
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili 
  • Kenyan citizen or authorized to work in Kenya
