Natural Justice: Lawyers for Communities and the Environment is a non-profit organisation, specialising in human rights and environmental law, operating in several countries in Africa, at the pan Africa level and influencing global processes. We are a team of progressive legal practitioners and activists who conduct comprehensive research on environmental and human rights law, stand behind communities and local organisations, provide technical advice to governments and intergovernmental organisations, engage in key campaigns and in key international processes in pursuit of social and environmental justice. Natural Justice is headquartered in Cape Town with and has three regional Hubs based in Senegal, Kenya and South Africa.
What we are looking for
Based in Cape Town but open to all locations in SA (no relocation assistance would be provided) (hybrid working model – 2 days in office), Natural Justice seeks to appoint a HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER.
The HR Manager will lead the HR strategy for the organisation. He/she will take ownership of all HR matters across the organisation from recruitment to performance reviews, salary reviews, disciplinary action, learning and development and take full responsibility driving a healthy organisational culture. The HR Manager will support the work of the Chief Financial & Operations Officer (CFOO) and assist the CFOO with oversight and implement efficient and diligent human resources practices. The incumbent will uphold and exemplify NJ, its vision, mission, values, and objectives.
Key responsibilities
Key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:
- Support departments in developing and delivering strategic HR plans that fit with the plan of the organisation.
- Support all organisational processes and assist with implementation.
- Manage the recruitment process, including recruiting, interviewing, selection, and onboarding.
- Ensure job descriptions are up to date and employees understand the expectations from the organisation.
- Develop clear policies and ensure policy awareness.
- Ensure all company HR policies are in place and applied consistently.
- Carrying out administrative requirements as required.
- Develop training materials and performance management programs to help ensure employees understand their job responsibilities.
- Create a compensation strategy for all employees based on market research and pay surveys; keeps the strategy up to date for approval by CFOO.
- Responsible for employee relations, manage the grievance process and investigate employee issues and conflicts and bring them to resolution.
- Handle confidential matters with discretion.
- In collaboration with Hub HROs ensure the organisation’s compliance with regulatory laws in each country.
- Use performance management tools to provide guidance and feedback to team.
- Oversee and ensure board management processes are successfully executed as required.
- Maintain company organisation charts and employee directory.
- Partner with management to ensure strategic HR goals are aligned with the organisation’s initiatives.
- Develop and maintain HR systems and processes.
- Ensure risk management audits and strategies are in place as required by the organisation.
- Provide support and guidance to HR staff across the organisation.
- Design and implement employee retention strategies.
- Ensure successful implementation of an organisational development and wellness plan including surveys, building a healthy organisational culture, and managing diversity sessions.
- Prepare HR Reports and submit to the CFOO on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
The HR Manager must meet the following criteria:
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Social Sciences or related field
- At least five years’ working experience in human resources.
- Experience in the non-profit environment will be an added advantage.
- Proactive approach to work and good self-motivation
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
- Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to deal with people from different cultures.
- Ability to deal authoritatively with a range of partners and contractors.
- A strategic thinker with strong leadership capabilities, highly motivated, committed and goal orientated.
- Ability to work flexibly and to adapt to changing demands and circumstances
