Over the next two days, the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK) in conjunction with Natural Justice and WWF for Nature is running a workshop in Nairobi that brings together religious leaders, members of the civil society, technical experts and government officials to discuss issues around coal usage in Kenya. The meeting is aimed at giving religious leaders a chance to hear the voices of various actors regarding coal usage and the environmental, social and economic impact of mining and using coal.
Presentations will be made on the effectiveness of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) as an environmental decision-making tool, climate change & coal and health impacts of coal. Additionally project affected persons from Kitui, and Lamu Counties shall share their perspectives
The meeting is intended to spur healthy evidence-based discussion around the proposed mining and usage of coal and for many of the country’s religious leaders to decide on their stand relating to coal.
