Director, Francophone Africa; Programme Director: Customary Use and Conservation
Barbara Lassen is the director of the Customary Use and Conservation Programme, and the director of Francophone Africa. She joined Natural Justice in 2014 and is based in Cotonou, Benin. Her thematic work focuses on ABS and on governance of protected areas, including indigenous and community conserved areas (ICCAs).
Before joining Natural Justice, she worked for GIZ at the ABS Capacity Development Initiative, and before that for the IUCN Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy (CEESP) where she helped to start what would become the ICCA consortium. She is still a member of both networks, and of the World Commission on Protected Areas. She holds a Masters in International Environmental Policy from the Monterey Institute of International Studies and a Degree in Landscape Ecology from the University of Münster.
