Natural Justice is coordinating the African Bio-cultural Community Protocol (BCP) Initiative in partnership with ETC-COMPAS, Centre for Indigenous Knowledge and Organizational Development (CIKOD), and the ABS Capacity Development Initiative for Africa (ABS Initiative). The Initiative involves several communities and community-based organizations in the following countries:

  • South Africa (Bushbuckridge Traditional Health Practitioners Association)
  • Namibia (San Support Organizations)
  • Kenya (Lamu, Samburu, Kivulini, and Karima communities)
  • Ethiopia (Melca)
  • Ghana (CIKOD, Tanchara community, Shea Nut Coalition)
  • Benin (Shea Nut Coalition)
  • Burkina Faso (Shea Nut Coalition)

The project is funded from 2011-2012 by the ABS Initiative and the Christensen Fund. Its aims include supporting the further development and implementation of BCPs, towards multi-stakeholder dialogues and legal recognition; facilitating peer learning and exchange of experiences; documentation of lessons learned; building the capacity of African law practitioners and community-based organizations and representatives for effective legal support; and developing biocultural rights courses and training programmes. For more information about some of the experiences and lessons learned through this initiative, please visit the dedicated community protocols website .

With project funding from Open A.I.R., Natural Justice is also supporting the Bushbuckridge Traditional Health Practitioners Association in Mpumalanga, South Africa, to conduct research and assessment of their systems for managing material and knowledge commons.

In addition, Natural Justice is collaborating with the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT) to explore the application of BCPs in the context of biotrade in Madagascar (Vohimana), as well as in Peru (Madre de Dios) and Brazil (Belem).
